Tuscarora I.U. 11 STEM In-service at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA
Allegheny Educational Systems partnered with the Tuscarora I.U. to hold 2 days of a 5-day STEM workshop for elementary and middle school teachers from both I.U. 10 and 11. The workshop centered on STEM applications that the teachers could take back to their respective schools for collaboration and implementation in the fall.
One of the activities that both groups of teachers did was a 3D Printing application using the Rokenbok Education RokBlock manipulatives and curriculum to build an airplane, then use an on-line CAD product to download source files to design the blades and nose cone for the plane. The teachers had to measure the parts to ensure that they would fit the assembly parameters for attaching the blades and nose cone to the body of the plane. This provided a great STEM application that included reading, math, science and technology to solve a context based problem. Each group of teachers completed the files necessary to 3D print the CAD files that night so they were ready for inspection and assembly the next day.
